Saluti da Roma!

We now have a new Deacon: Patrick Ngamesha. Shortly after Easter, all roads led to the Eternal City for the diaconate ordination of 15 Companions coming from 5 Continents. Jesuits, family members and friends joined the ordinands in prayer on the eve of their D-Day for the gift of this new office that was about to be entrusted to them. Our own Patrick had the entire African Assistancy in diaspora by his side to witness this unique function.

Come Easter-Tuesday April 18, 2017 at exactly 16:00 hrs., the solemn liturgical procession had begun in a fully packed Gesù, the Mother Church of the Society of Jesus. Patrick walked tall and confident with a glimmering smile, a sign that he was ready to say, "I do".

In his succinct yet clear-cut sermon, the chief celebrant, Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer SJ - Secretary of the CDF exhorted the ordinands that even though theirs was a transitional diaconate, the spirit of diaconia is for life and so ought to be tirelessly exercised amongst God's people.

After the laying of hands and invocation of Saints, the new deacons were now clad in their dalmatic apparel with Patrick being vested by Fr Fratern Masawe SJ. The two-hour liturgy was incredibly solemn, singing by the scholastics at the Gesù was unexcelled, the Roman weather couldn't be any friendlier and everyone seemed gratified. The following day, the newly ordained deacons together with their guests attended the General Papal Audience in St Peter's Square.

Commenting on the resurrection text of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, the Holy Father told a mammoth crowd gathered that the Easter occurrence is neither an ideology nor a philosophy but a reality. We continue to live it through our faith, a grace given to those with open hearts. And when this happens, our comfortable existence is overturned and an unexpected future opens, sowing life and light in place of death and sorrow. After a special apostolic blessing, he personally greeted all the 15 deacons with these words, Quindici diaconi? Mamma mia, grazie a Dio!
