Seven Miles So Near, yet So far

By Fr Clyde Muropa SJ

Luke 24: 13- - 35

Anyone of us could be that close yet far from Jerusalem, the arena of events! You could be that close to where the Lord wants you to be, yet that far that, if not careful, events will take place "in your own vicinity" without you noticing.

You are conscious of where you are coming from (in your life), but imaging the better things ahead, yet, the here and now tends to be forgotten. The here and now.....!

You have the curiosity, even talking to others, "Are you the only one who doesn't know...." So you know, yet you really do not know.

Tinted passions and tinted anxieties lead you away, make you see but not recognize, even make attempts to engage with the real, yet your imaginations lead you not to recognize.

First, know who you are and where you are coming from; yet very ignorant of where you are now. You aren't paying attention to the GPS of your spiritual life. Secondly, who is your companion? You have company, yet all is fuzzy. You see but unable to recognize. You seemingly are on the same journey, or merely on the same way, same direction? Is your destiny resonating with the other pilgrims in your life?

He walks with us daily, [at the work place, at college, in the family, amongst friends], yet we even try to tell him his story, because we are re-writing it to suit what we "would want it to be like" We even have the temerity to invite, yet ignore the many around us who await that invitation. Who would be your guest today, because it is nearly dark? Christ does not impose himself unto your abode, does not impose himself into your family, into your life, into your faith life - he waits for you to genuinely invite him!

Take the risk; invite the "stranger" who is the Lord. Walking with him entails listening, being attentive. Are we attentive to the promptings of the Spirit here and now? Or our quests make us want to direct the Spirit of God, where we want, how we want him to be in our life! Attentiveness requires patience, respect, and faith. Allow the Lord to re-catechize you, without you setting the conditions, but allowing life to be guided and directed by HIM. First invite yourself back to the fold, then ask for openness to see, and recognize, and pay attention, not to hijack the story of your life and write it your way, but allow him to guide your story! You might be only seven miles near, yet far: from the Giver of Life.
