Updates from Loyola House - AOR Province

By Fr. Lawrence Kyaligonza, SJ

Just in a span of three days, we enjoyed two superb celebrations. On 29th July, Fr. Triaille Etienne, SJ marked fifty years of priestly service in Africa – feast day of St. Martha, to whom Etienne has a special devotion.

The celebration took place at Hekima University College - beginning at 3:30PM with the Holy Eucharist and ending with photo sessions and refreshments. Representative Jesuits from all the Jesuit communities in Nairobi attended the celebration. We were blessed with the presence of many religious and lay people to whom Etienne ministers – a clear sign that he has truly lived his vocation as a priest, religious, and missionary/ambassador.

The lay people who attended include the Pax Romana community, the French speaking community, the English community, the UN Catholic Fellowship, and St. George's Secondary School (choir). The girls from St. George's sung and danced very well during mass. Etienne could not hide his joy and gratitude for how God has worked through him; his nunc dimittis says it all "When you have done all you have been told to do, say, we are useless servants, we have done no more than our duty" (Lk 17:10).

Immediately after the celebration, ten Little Sisters of St. Francis (Kasarani) visited our community; they joined us for our Saturday evening socials and for dinner. It was a super cool evening! We used the occasion to thank the sisters for having hosted three companions from our province (Zachary Miricho, Philo Nguruwe, and Lawrence Kyaligonza) during their tertianship experiment.

On 31st July, we had the climax of our celebrations – the feast day of our founder. All the Jesuits in Nairobi celebrated the feast day of St. Ignatius at Loyola community. The celebration began at 5:30PM with the Holy Eucharist.

The main celebrant was Bishop Rodrigo Mejia and Fr. Provincial was our homilist, given that all our seven deacons have already been ordained to the priesthood. Fr. Provincial reminded us of our vocation to holiness and he urged us to constantly ask God to place us with His son. The more or less 'Jesuit-only' celebration ended with socials and a simple dinner – no music, no entertainment – just to allow for fraternal conversations!
