Celebrating the Feast of St Ignatius of Loyola with Zambuko House

unnamed 2The Zimbabwe-Mozambique Province joyfully celebrated the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola with over 400 congregants, on the 21st of July at St Francis Xavier Parish, in Braeside, Harare. Fr Chiedza Chimhanda SJ, the Provincial, concelebrated the mass with Fr Stephen Silungwe SJ, the parish priest, Fr Nigel Johnson SJ, the Development and Communications Director and other Jesuit priests.

For the past three years, the Development Office has brought together Jesuits, lay collaborators, parishioners in Jesuit run parishes and various congregants to celebrate the feast day and mobilise support for Jesuit apostolates.
The fundraising aims at mobilizing monetary and non-monetary resources from parishioners, corporate institutions and non-Catholic individuals for the upkeep and development of Jesuit apostolates.

This year the focus is on Zambuko House, a refuge and rehabilitation center for street children, established by the Late Br Canisius Chishiri SJ in 1995.

In 2016, Our Lady of the Wayside, Mt Pleasant hosted the celebrations which focused on Makumbi Children's home. Several thousands of dollars were raised with some individuals still honouring their periodic commitments.
At the end of the Eucharistic celebrations, the congregants were invited for a presentation on Zambuko House. An auction was also conducted with various items going under the hammer.

Items sold included food hampers, electrical appliances, beverages, classic vintage chair, a return holiday ticket (for two) to Victoria Falls, shopping vouchers, among others.

All items auctioned were generously donated by corporate instituions and individuals inspired to be men and women for others.

Speaking as the guest of Honour at the celebrations, Schweppes Group Managing Director Mr Charles Msipa recalled from his day visit to Zambuko House as 'an amazing place' where the Jesuits are doing "an incredible job."
"It is an honour to join the Jesuit community in celebrating the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola and at the same time responding to the needs of the vulnerable in this case Zambuko House."

Inspired by the work at the rehabilitation center, Mr Msipa announced that he will assist the Zambuko with agricultural support in order to produce and supply tomato processing company with produce which will also boost the income and skills learning for the children.

Fr Chiedza Chimhanda SJ invited the congregants to support Zambuko House and other apostolates.
"Life is different out there." He said this describing his experience from a visit to Mukuvisi river, where several homeless children live.
