Hekima College to Participate in Jesuit Summer Seminar on "Religion in the Virtual Age" at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington

As it has happened during the summer months of earlier years, 2018 summer months would also witness a Jesuit summer seminar on the theme: "Religion in the Virtual Age" at Gonzaga University, Spokane WA, in the United States of America. Prof. Tim Clancy SJ would again be at the forefront to organize and facilitate a continued learning in this growingly pertinent area of inquiry.

It needs no belaboring to indicate the pervasive digital ambience of our times, together with its inescapable impact on our identity. Gone are the days when information technology remained an elite arena and its scope being restricted to a few privileged ones. Today, its presence and impact are ubiquitous. As such, it has become increasingly impossible to see areas of inquiry in a compartmentalized view.

Departments even as diverse as theology and technology are beginning to show signs of mutual impacts. For instance, the students at Hekima have displayed notable interest in courses that inquire into the nexus of Theology and Technology. Their increasing interest is partly fueled by their very background.

A number of them have hands on experience in software or hardware or a combination of both. These are, to borrow Prof. Clancy's parlance, indeed "digital natives." And their "telepresence" definitely colors their "search for the sacred," the impact of which can be deciphered in the topics they research on and the papers they put together.

To build on this their palpable inter-disciplinary passion, Hekima is planning to send a three-member delegation (a faculty member and two students) to the Jesuit summer seminar of 2018. We thank Gonzaga university, particularly Prof. Tim Clancy SJ, for sponsoring the Hekima delegation.

Exposure to such an intellectual exchange will immensely contribute to further reflections at Hekima on ways and means of bringing into conversation our Catholic as well as virtual identities. This will in turn pave the way for planning some innovative means - following our Jesuit pioneering spirit - to inquire into oneself, one's God and the world around.
