Fr. General Meets with Jesuits at Mwangaza Spiritual Centre, and the Final Dinner

mwangazaAt about half past 3.00 PM, Father General arrived at Mwangaza Jesuit Spiritual Centre where he was met by the Director of the Centre, Fr. Miguel Garcia, SJ, and Fr. Leo Amani, SJ, Superior of Pedro Arrupe Community and tertianship Director, alongside other Jesuits. He was then given a tour of the facility before heading for a meeting with the Jesuits at the Main Chapel.

Fr. Leo Amani, SJ, welcomed all in attendance then introduced Fr. Joseph Afulo, SJ, AOR Provincial, to formally invite Father General for the Jesuit Conversation. In his speech, Fr. General recounted the decrees of GC 36 emphasizing on reconciliation that, "The General Congregation underlines that reconciliation is a mission of hope conscious of individual situations in people's lives. As agents of reconciliation we are invited to bring messages of hope." He also talked about Social justice and dialogue among cultures and different religions, service of faith, intellectual depth, community life, common discernment and planning, networking, collaboration and the need for a deeper spiritual conversation among Jesuits.mwangaza3

On the organization of the society, Fr. General indicated that, "we have to organize the Society to be more effective for the mission; so that the mission is in focus." In this regard, he said that "...we have to be organized, make common discernment, and then plan and evaluate our plans." He put an emphasis on the mission-oriented government of the Society of Jesus with three dimensions; namely, personal, spiritual and apostolic. This golden principle is not always followed he said. He reminded Jesuits that "Governance structures of the Society of Jesus were created at specific moments of history to respond to concrete mission situations. Each level of our governance structure has the necessary delegated authority for achieving its goals. Do not be afraid to delegate if that is beneficial for the effectiveness of the mission."

After the meeting, Father General celebrated Mass animated by some AOR scholastics from Hekima College. Several Jesuits, a few Superiors from Ignatian Congregations and other religious congregations resident in Nairobi were in attendance.
